Why MAKAL Was Established
Built on Experience. Driven by the Gaps.
MAKAL was established from firsthand industry experience and a recognition that significant gaps continue to exist across workplace risk prevention, workers' compensation, injury management, workplace investigations and return-to-work processes.
Having worked across the workers' compensation journey, from initial notification and complex claims management through to rehabilitation and recovery at work, MAKAL's founder has seen how communication breakdowns, delayed interventions and fragmented processes can affect both organisations and injured workers.
To further explore these challenges, the founder conducted an industry survey involving Senior Workers' Compensation Case Managers, Return to Work Coordinators, Injury Management Advisors and Work Health and Safety professionals across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand (ACC).
The feedback identified recurring concerns, particularly around communication, workplace investigation processes, delayed return-to-work planning and coordination of injury management.
These insights helped shape MAKAL's purpose: to bridge the gap between workplace realities, risk prevention, effective injury management and informed decision-making.
MAKAL was created to offer something different, independent expertise, continuity, genuine engagement and practical solutions informed by real industry experience.

MAKAL's founder brings almost 20 years of experience in workers' compensation, self-insurance, complex and psychological injury claims, early intervention, injury management and return-to-work coordination.
This experience is supported by completed specialist training in Queensland and New South Wales:
Queensland: Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator training through OHSA, under Queensland's regulator-approved training framework.
New South Wales: State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) Return to Work Coordination training, completed.
With practical experience across multiple workers' compensation schemes and organisational environments, MAKAL understands the importance of employer obligations, fair processes, effective communication and evidence-informed decisions.

Behind MAKAL is almost two decades of hands-on experience supporting workers, employers and organisations through complex workplace and workers’ compensation matters. Meet the founder and learn what shaped MAKAL’s approach.
About the Founder
MAKAL Independent Workplace Analysis & Workers Compensation Advisory was founded by Millie Malaki-Ioapo, bringing almost 20 years’ practical experience across the Australian workers’ compensation and injury management landscape.
Millie’s career has spanned local government, state government, federal government, private-sector organisations and self-insured environments, providing experience across a wide range of operating models, organisational structures and workplace settings.
Her work has also been multi-jurisdictional, with experience across Australian state and federal workers’ compensation schemes. This has provided a practical understanding of how claims, responsibilities and decision-making can differ between jurisdictions, while the fundamentals of sound evidence, fair process and effective injury management remain essential.
Across her career, Millie has worked throughout the end-to-end claims lifecycle, including claim lodgement and determination, complex claims management, physical and psychological injuries, early intervention, injury management, return-to-work planning, medical evidence, stakeholder engagement, disputed matters and complex claim reviews.
A significant part of this work has involved examining complex information, identifying inconsistencies or gaps, reviewing differing accounts and determining whether the available evidence supports the position being taken.
This experience has developed a strong analytical and investigative mindset looking beyond individual documents or statements to understand the chronology, context and evidence as a whole.
That practical experience underpins MAKAL.
MAKAL brings together workers’ compensation knowledge, injury management experience and workplace analysis to help organisations better understand complex workplace matters, identify what the available information is showing and move forward with a clearer and more practical pathway.
Coming December 2026
MAKAL is also preparing to introduce another MAKAL Independent Workplace Stream from December 2026.
This future service will build on the same evidence-focused approach already central to MAKAL: careful information gathering, objective assessment, procedural fairness and clear reporting.
The Meaning Behind MAKAL
MAKAL was named in honour of two late family members who helped shape the values behind the business.
MALAKI comes from Millie’s late father, her family name.
KALAMA honours her late father-in-law, Reverend Kalama.
Both were men of faith, service, leadership and community.
